Welcome. It is nice to have someone who has experience in translating :).

Reply: Of course :^D . The more the merrier. (Even though I recommand people translate other volumes to reduce the chance of repetition....

--Thelastguardian 09:20, 20 April 2006 (PDT)

Hmm. Yes and no. I was thinking that repeated attention to the more thorny points of translation, by different translators, might resolve the problems. That has been my experience, in other collaborative translation projects. In translation, too many cooks don't spoil the brew -- provided there is a master chef. How's your Escoffier impression, TLG?

Request for clarification of a passage[edit]

Since you apparently have access to the original Japanese novel here's a question. In Chapter 1 Kyon says: In the middle of all this mess there was always only one perpetrator: Haruhi – May arrived quietly. In this passage, Kyon implies that all disturbances at the school are related to Haruhi's antics. In contrast, May is said to arrive without significant events occuring. Does the original Japanese contain this conflict? -- Baltakatei 23:59, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

Glad to assist. The original passage (end of page 25 in the novel) is

そんなこんなをしながら~~もっとも、そんなこんなをしていたのはハルヒだけだったが~~五月がやってくる。

sonnakonna o shinagara -- mottomo, sonnakonna shite ita no wa Haruhi dakedatta ga -- gogatsu yatte kuru.

Or in other words:

"As this and that was happening -- although, it was always Haruhi doing this and that, however -- May arrived."

That's the literal translation, and I think the translation you cited above is perhaps a bit too free.

Moved to Editor?[edit]

Hello Nature! (I ws going to say Freak, but i thought better of it ^^; ) or should that be FON?

But more pressing, why the sudden change?

While you have mainly been Editing, that really is no fault of your own, due to the misunderstanding with Kinny.

We dearly need Translators, and i don't see why you can't continue as you are.

once we are clear of volume 01, you are free to designate your desired chapters, if you are worry about any other conflicts i'm commited to make this project be fun, smooth running, and if i have to, god forbid take some responsibility as its the only thing i can do to help.

It will be quite a blow to lose a vaulable translator for our project, unlike me who has no skill what so ever, and can't even translate a single kanji. I'am only thankful that my constant meddling is seen as a useful thing ^^;.

So all I can do right now is this, I ask you, as a personal plea to reconsider this.

m(_ _)m

Sincerely,

To add in, while there are obvious benefits to having an editor who has access to the original material I stand by my stance of "better to have more rough first drafts out than few high quality pieces". Who's to say you can't translate a chapter while editing others? Your call ultimately, but Onizuka and I would be more happier if you chose to do some chapters.

I usually answer to FON, as a handy abbreviation.

With regards to moving to editor, I suppose I'm feeling a bit unsettled by the recent tiff, and I don't want to ruin my sense of fun. Yes, I have access to the original Japanese text, but I'm not a fast translator. On the other hand, I'm not translating at second-hand, from a Chinese version. So it's pros and cons mixed together.

My main reason for not wanting to be a translator is that I haven't read beyond the first part of volume 2, yet (though I have all the volumes), because I read fairly slowly in Japanese (compared to the other languages I speak, in which I am a speed reader... I have doubts that I'll ever read that fast in Japanese, but I am making progress). Anyway, I don't want to spoil my enjoyment of the volumes by leaping ahead and doing, say, volume 5.

On the other hand, I get the idea that Kinny Riddle has more or less agreed with TLG that Kinny is going to be translating the first three volumes alone. That being the case, there's nowhere for me to pick up and start translating, because I don't want to jump ahead. If I could start translating one of the middle-to-last chapters of volume 2, then maybe I'd do it -- because there'd be a chance of my getting it done without too much interference, and because it wouldn't spoil things too much for me. But it doesn't look like that -- so I think I'll stick with editing. I'm very good at that, so it will be easy. --Freak Of Nature 01:05, 24 April 2006 (PDT)

I see. Though it never was concrete that Kinny would do the first 3 volumes alone - merely the first. Why not discuss with him that you do Vol 2 Ch 4,5?

--Psieye 03:48, 24 April 2006 (PDT)

The only reason TLG has put up a registration page is that after volume 01, he wish t make it clear that other translators can contribute. I'm certain you will be able to do chapters on volume 02.

In fact if you read the Guideline it is now specifically mentioned that no one translators can register to "reserve" more then 1/2 of one volume at a time.

This is merely to allow Kinny to hav ea rest (which dispite what he says, he does need to rest now and again ), and also to make sure everyone is used efficiently. Sometimes we need a change because it is more refreshing for the editors. (^^)

I advise that you just register the chapters you want, if you get to it first then you are guarantee to have a crack at it.

sincerely,

Onizuka-gto 06:26, 24 April 2006 (PDT)

FoN. I have placed you on the Translators list, for chapter 4 & 5 of volume 02, as you expressed a desire to do some of the later chapters. If you want to do a different one, then just change to it.

Really FoN, I insist you do some of volume 02, even if it's the last ones you do. I really hope to read some of your work FoN, and although it would be arrogant of me to promise that you will not have any interference, me and all the editors will keep it minimum so that all project translators shall be able to work unhinded.

please that is all i ask of you, to trust us.

Sincerely,

inactivity[edit]

Good day,

We are doing some spring cleaning in our right groups (translator, editor, etc.), and people who have been inactive for more than a year are being removed. This unfortunatly appears to be your case.

I thank you for your past work ; if you come back someday and need those tools again, please contact Help:Administration_Contact_Page
