The Greek Evagrius?[edit]

I'm not so sure that Evagrius was Greek as Kawakami-san apparently asserts. According to the infallible Wikipedia, Evagrius was from north-central Turkey. I guess it's not inconceivable that he was of Greek extraction, but the mere fact that he wrote of the Eight Evil Thoughts in Greek doesn't mean that he himself was Greek. The Greek language was the language of philosophy and the highly educated in those days, much as Latin became the language of science and the arts later on. In any case, it's not our place to revise Kawakami-san's work in such a manner so I left the passage as is. But on the off chance that someone with access to the Japanese text can confirm that this was a mistranslation rather than the actual intent, I think it would be more appropriate to leave out the bit about Evagrius being Greek. Yes, I am pedantic. :) --Txtracer (talk) 02:49, 15 December 2014 (CST)

It definitely says that, but to be fair the Kingdom of Pontus was a Hellenistic kingdom, so it is within the greek area of influence. Also, it probably was inside the "Greece" area in the Harmonic Divine States. Strike Forcer (talk) 19:10, 25 December 2014 (CST)
