すます　澄ます

【耳などを】
人の気配がするかと耳を澄ます／listen for a sound of life.

1 〔泥水などをきれいにする〕 clear; make clear; clarify.
2 〔耳をそばだてる〕 strain [perk, prick up] 《one's ears》.
耳を澄まして聞く　listen intently [with strained ears] 《to…》.
彼は耳を澄まして聞いていた.　He was all ears [attention].
・耳を澄ますと波の音が聞こえる.　If you strain your ears, you can (just) hear the sound of the waves.
