The Monogatari series centers on Koyomi Araragi, a third year high school student who is almost human again after briefly becoming a vampire. One day, a classmate named Hitagi Senjōgahara, who infamously never talks to anyone, falls down the stairs into Koyomi's arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs next to nothing, in defiance of physics. Despite being threatened by her, Koyomi offers his help, and introduces her to Meme Oshino, a middle-aged homeless man who helped him stop being a vampire.

I think its about time I talked about Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. I believe it's something that I have to do. I met her in the spring break between my second and third years of high school. That meeting was impactful , and also quite devastating. In any case, I thought I had really bad luck――of course, this probably wouldn't be the case if I wasn't there, but instead, someone else was in my shoes. Actually, I do think it's quite irresponsible to say that it was really bad luck that got me into this, and that maybe I should just accept that it was all my fault. In the end, I believe that me being there had started that chain of events. That chain of events. Not putting too much thought on such a careless thing, expressing it in that way――just for the sake of presenting it as "that chain of events", I honestly don't know exactly how large this chain actually was. What event was it that started it all, and followed it, and how did it end――I can't come up with a clear picture of it. And that's possible because even now it hasn't ended, or maybe that it hasn't even started yet――I honestly believed that, neither putting it as a pretense, nor a play on words. In the end, I couldn't tell how it all played out from any point of view other than my own, and so I leave others wondering for all of eternity, exactly what kind of meaning this chain of events did have――as well as what kind of meaning this chain of events did not have. If I was able to ask them about the story, perhaps I would be able to grasp that much――but it is precisely because of that, that I wouldn't be able to tell if that was the real story. It wouldn't be the truth, but what they recognized. And that might be enough. However, to begin with (and that is the only thing I can conclude), she was the kind of existence who was in the center of it all――Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. Having a meaning different only to the observer. Having a different meaning from the observer. And that meaning had nothing to do with the observer. And that would be――that she was a vampire. That said, it would probably be of no use explaining what exactly is a vampire. They're in comic books, movies, games; a concept that's been totally overused. It's probably considered to have a deep relationship with most of the Japanese――not very well related to the culture that was born in this country. I guess it's an old concept that's been floating around in and about nowadays.

But, that spring.

I was attacked by a vampire, the concept that's been floating around in and about. You could say it was stupid. I really do think it's stupid. And because of that stupidity caused by no one other than myself――I fell into such hell for a period of two weeks.

And that spring, from beginning to end――was nothing more than hell. A hell that seemed like a joke, and a joke that seemed like hell. What event was it that started it all, and where did it follow, and how did it end――though I'm getting a bit ahead of myself, to me it will forever remain an enigma; a paradox that will never end. However, what I do know for certain, is when that hell started and when that hell ended.

March 26 until April 7.

That was――my spring break. Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade――afterwards, I understood what you would call the abnormality that is associated with an existence like hers. Abnormal. Monster. Outcast. In that case, perhaps at that time, at that place, observing her in that way――I think that's the main reason why I got put into this hell. It didn't quite match up with me as an observer. In which case, perhaps I was stupid after all. When thinking of her, it was probably inevitable that my stupidity would be thoroughly exposed――and although that basically seems like torturing myself, I guess I really do have to talk about that vampire. The story of being wounded by her.

The story of where I wounded her. I probably do have to talk about this. I believe it's something I have to do. That's my responsibility. ... though the introduction to this is quite a long one, there are also some parts I'd like you to bear with――though I say things like it being a responsibility, it was nothing more than stupid clowning around to begin with. I don't know where it all falls apart, and being timid about it, to be frank, I'm not confident I can finish this story. That's why I'm being long-winded like this, in comparison to a more plausible introduction. And though we're already near the end, even though the story has just started, the thing is that the stone's already started rolling down the hill, and it's quite difficult to stop it during its descent, but just for good measure, just by chance, in case I'm not prepared well enough, I think I should probably tell you how this story will end right now. This is a bad end, becoming related with a vampire. An ending where everyone is struck with misfortune. It is precisely because of that, that even though only the hell has ended, this chain of events probably hasn't, and to begin with, my responsibility of facing that woman will probably never end for the rest of my life.
