The Boredom of Fans of Suzumiya Haruhi
No Vol. 10, no season 2, no news, no nada. What are the fans to do?
Well, starting July, which coincidentally was about when the last official teaser video for second season was released (the infamous live security cam), a series of fan-made character song videos began to appear in various video sites, all carrying common title, theme, and tune.
Title - The One I Love Doesn't Notice Me, or Too Many Compete for the One I Love
Theme - The singer laments Kyon's lack of attention, despite her/his(?!) best efforts to appease him
Tune - borrowed from I Can't Defeat the Air Man, a riot in itself. Video game music turned parody about an unkillable boss, with hyper lyrical train, mounting frustrations, and the last straw - all of which must be ported into a successful Haruhi fan vid.

Suspect that vol. 10 was already finished (despite the author's claim of writer's block or whatever), because his stories are usually so tightly knit with hints and foreshadows that it would be impossible to change anything midstream. The most logical explanation is that its release is being timed with animation's and other marketing efforts for a bigger buzz.
As for those impressive fan works, sometimes they're so good it makes you wonder "is it love, or is it viral marketing?"
Otherwise, the silence is deafening.

Ah well. March for both, if your suspicion is correct.dnab wrote:Suspect that vol. 10 was already finished (despite the author's claim of writer's block or whatever), because his stories are usually so tightly knit with hints and foreshadows that it would be impossible to change anything midstream. Still, he had better release another short story collection within the same year, or somebody's gonna get a hurt reaaal bad.

I heard that the book was completed a while ago, on time to be released in july when it should have, but it was held up do to internal issues within the company... Where did I hear it again...?
It wont come back to me.
Anyways, it is possible for people to wait so long that they get tired, and when it does release, they don't bother with it. I do hope the book is out soon.

Haruhi novel fans in Japan are LOYAL, and they can get their Tanigawa fix through Escape From School (in fact I think EFS are works from rejected notes of Haruhi novels). Again as a corporate conspiracist I strongly believe that the cliff-hanging novel is held up for marketing reasons. If season 2 is to release next March, it would probably run through June and holy-beholdedly get an immediate international launch at AX/SDCC. If you think hearing nothing about Haruhi is bad, by this time next year the casual fans would probably get Haruhi-ODed.
Just to wrap up the Kyon-obsession character video series, here it is from the man himself:

(still oblivious, but why is the air so tense in the club room??)
I may just write the lyrics for the Overseas Version myself.

You know, I think these would be funnier if I could understand them.dnab wrote:Haruhi novel fans in Japan are LOYAL, and they can get their Tanigawa fix through Escape From School (in fact I think EFS are works from rejected notes of Haruhi novels). That's because 9 and 10 are one big (pair of intertwined) story(ies), which is why 10 was supposed to come out so quickly afterwards. It's like Kill Bill volumes 1 and 2. It wouldn't surprise me if he'd originally penned them as one huge book, but Kadokawa made him break it up and are now waiting for other media to happen to milk the publicity and demand for all they can. Just hope it doesn't backfire on them...typhonsentra wrote:The blackout is strange and disappointing. It also forces us to consider just how unsatisfying the last book was. It had a great start but it didn't go anywhere.
