Miscellaneous Notes

About the Kagami Takaya style

Kagami Takaya has a literary style that is sometimes dubbed as bad, sometimes dubbed as unique. While it is definitely easy to read, it can be easy to translate for the new translator, and yet hard to translate for the experienced translator who has some standard in quality. While a serious attempt has been made to make the translations as readable as possible in English, special care has also been taken to not over-embellish the sentences. A full attempt at liberal translations simply won't work and will just change the content too much to the point as if it were written by somebody else.

Additionally, following the suggestion of my proofer Tetsu-nii, who has professional writing experience, the translations have been rendered in mostly present tense (with conversions to active voice whenever possible, and more frequent use of present continuous and perfect tenses when applicable), intermingled with past tense for past events or 'just-past' actions. The outcome is better than expected, though there is still much room for improvement. Roaming editors, please do not convert things to past tense willfully without checking.

Support the original work

This is a free, non-profit fan translation for the purpose of language research and sharing a good story which is unlicensed for the English market. Note that all the images have been deliberately down-sampled. If possible, buy the original novel to get the HQ illustrations and to support the author, illustrator and the publisher. Please visit the forums to ask how to do that if you are not sure how and do not have access to a local store (such as Kinokuniya) where you can make an order request to bring the book to where you are. Otherwise simply use the ISBN numbers in the series overview to search on sites like Amazon or honto.jp. The eBook is also available on Bookwalker. If you are Chinese-speaking, the series should be licensed in Chinese in the course of time (not sure about Korean though).

Galleries

I find that having a gallery of illustrations where people view them first before they start reading can spoil the story. Anyone who has already flipped through volume 2 before reading it will understand what I mean. Illustrations should be seen in order as one progresses along the story as dictated by the book. As such, all volume galleries will be removed and compiled into one gallery outside of the volumes for those who want to view them first.
