Chapter 6: Under the Waves[edit]

The Order of the Silver Egg was to move out late in the night. Although they were the only unit in this expedition, their number reached close to a thousand and were gathered inside the ship’s hold of three merchant ships. Inside the dark cargo hold, their smell of sweat and the sea filled the room. Sound of waves crashing against the ship and the weapons colliding against each other due to the waves rang nonstop.

“I feel like I’ve turned into salted herring.”

“We will be well marinated upon disembarking.”

“Since we are getting marinated, it will be tastier if we add some cucumber.”

The soldiers were chatting idly though their voices were gradually losing their liveliness.

“Looks like the supply team didn’t come along this time.”

“What should we do without red wine?”

“I hope this will be the last time we are dispatched by boat…”

Usually, the supply team which transport provisions will accompany them during an expedition. However, only the combat unit was mobilized due to a lack of ships. Coupled with seasickness, the soldiers morale fell even lower.

“Since the military wardens are here, why can’t they load a few more oak casks?”

“That’s right!” “Those guys, even though different from us, are quite conceited.” “They look at us as if appraising our strength, how annoying.”

The wardens were knights dispatched by other units to verify the situation and report back to their respective army. They brought along their own flags and armour which took up even more space in the room, causing the soldiers to be discontented.

“What about it? We just have to endure until we reach Princinopolis.” A young soldier said.

“That’s right, we are the sacred unit dispatched to regain the Grand Cathedral.”

“To the citizens, we are their messiahs. I’m sure the citizens will prepare a feast and comfortable beds for us.”

“That… may not be the case.”

Chris who could not remain silent anymore interjected.

“What is it, Chris? You think that they won’t do it?”

“That reminds me, he knows about the situation in Princinopolis!”

The people around all looked at Chris, causing him to be unsure whether to continue speaking. Without doubt, Chris knew about the situation in Princinopolis. The cities around the Grand Cathedral were spared from the previous war as the Holy Kingdom’s target was only the Grand Cathedral.

“While it’s true that many Palkai believers are there, I’m uncertain whether they would welcome us… After all, they may have believed that the Allied Army had abandoned the Grand Cathedral and retreated.”

“And what can we do about it? After all, we lost the battle.”

“That’s too unreasonable! If they think that we are useless, Princinopolis’ citizens should just protect the Grand Cathedral themselves!”

“Let’s rob them if they didn’t prepare a feast for us... “ A few soldiers said this jokingly, causing the surrounding people to laugh. Chris sighed as he put his knees on the floor.

“Hey, Chris, aren’t you a little too distant?” An old soldier said to Chris teasingly.

“That’s because he doesn’t drink.”

“He doesn’t gamble, not interested in any hat’s accessories nor does he wear any shiny boots.”

As they were all inside the narrow room, there was not much they could do other than talking idly. The soldiers gathered around Chris and began talking to him.

“He has been a mercenary for ten years. I wonder if there’s anything he really enjoyed in his life.”

“He doesn’t seems to be interested in prostitution either.”

“T,that…”

This topic troubled him and caused him to panic, but he could not escape anywhere inside the room.

“As the chief’s personal guard, doesn’t he get to sleep together with three women?”

“That’s right, you saw Meena’s body, right? Aren’t you in the same tent before attacking Santcarillon?”

“That’s right! He saw Meena’s body, which resulted in him being chased out!”

“Eh? A,are you guys referring to that time?”

——Someone saw it… Chris paled.

“Hats off you!”

“That was an accident——”
