The Big List of Manga

Post by Guest lol »

Due to Ben's request of a similar thread but about Manga, this is gonig to be the big list of manga.

Please post reviews in the same format of the ones in the Anime thread.

If the manga has a [x] beside the name, I will probably (or I'll get Ben1234 to) re review the anime due to what I believe is unfair rating.

PLEASE PUT IN ALL RATINGS IN THIS FORMAT, IF YOU DO NOT USE THIS FORMAT (and a proper review) I WILL NOT PUT IT IN.

Spoiler! :
Ichigo 100% Rerated by GuestLol
9/10
Genre: Comedy, romance, drama

Summary: Manaka Junpei aspires to be a movie director. One days he sees a beautiful girl on the roof of his school and happens by chance to come across the writings of Toujo Aya. When returns the notebook to it's owner, he decides she was not the girl on the roof. At the urging of his friends, he seeks out another girl and asks her out hoping she was the one he saw. Despite his new relationship, the stories of Aya still inspire his artistic sense and he is set to make them into film.

Thoughts: Although I felt that in the end, Manaka *************, that doesn't mean that this manga deserves a bad score /grares at Dan. I felt that the author did an amazing job when writing the story for this manga. This manga truly pulls on your heart's strings. Will he pick the girl? Will he not miss his chance? Will he stop being stupid? It's these things that truly are amazing. Look beyond the ending and it's amazing. I also empathize with the author. The characters in the novel are like his children, they are his creation. It's natural for a father to want his children to be happy, so he chose the path that would bring happiness in all his children (to a degree).

I's Rerated by GuestLol
9.5/10

Genre: Comedy, romance, drama

Summary: Ichitaka Seto has a crush on one of his classmates, Iori Yoshizuki, but she has recently become a popular idol. By luck he gets to work on a school project together with her and has a chance to get closer to her. As they get closer, a childhood friend comes back into his life after having moved away when he was young. The young man becomes torn from his feelings between the two and as time goes on, is even more divided by the other women he meets.

Thoughts: "Another craptastic series." Says Dan. Psh you suck! This romance manga is definitely a MUST read. Imagine it as Ichigo 100%, except the main character isn't a stupid dumbass. After reading Ichigo, this is definitely a great change of pace because of the main character is more of an average man. He will make love to a woman because she's there, and he's not afraid to masturbate to porno. The thing that probably makes most readers enjoy this is that he's so much like an average guy, and his romance can be "kinda" be related to a lot of us (excluding the mad pimping abilities he carries).

Midori no Hibi (Midori's Days)
10/10
Genre: Comedy, Romance, School Life, Ecchi(?), Shounen

Summary: Sawamura Seiji is the toughest 17 year old in town, feared by all for his fighting prowess and his deadly "devil's right hand." But at heart, Seiji is a softy, and all he wants is an end to his 17 year history of being a lonely, single guy. Unfortunately his tough-guy reputation only serves to decrease his popularity with the ladies. Think of how surprised he is, when his right hand suddenly turns into a girl who claims to have a crush on him! (Taken and edited from Viz)

Thoughts: The second manga I ever finished in my whole manga reading life, and to this day, still remains one of my favorites. With a wide cast of characters that (somehow) avoids turning into a harem. The story is (according to some people) touching, and it sort of is touching in more than a way. I don't really care for art (it's OK as long as the characters look like how they're supposed to look). Anyway, it's a great manga to read, if only the anime was as good as this.

Watashi No Messiah-Sama (My Messiah) Note: Still ongoing.
9.5/10
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Romance

Summary: Shinya doesn't get stellar grades, he's not athletic, he's a coward, he's a wimp... he's a general good-for-nothing. One day, however; he meets Haruna. A girl that could change his life forever. Haruna tells Shinya he is the Messiah. The Lord chosen to save her world and that she is his shield. Could it be true? Could Shinya's life of ineptitude be balance for this one grand cause? Is he really the Messiah? If he is, can he save himself, let alone an entire world? (Taken from http://www.manga-heaven.n-u-l-l.net/)

Thoughts: I was attracted to this manga due to boredom at first, but now it's taken it's rightful place at #1 in my "top 10 list of (in my opinion) must read manga". So far, I've read up to volume 6, so I can't really review everything. Having typed that,, I think the storyline is one of the best I've ever read, in fact, it's actually one of the few mangas out there that makes me want more. In fact, I would have given this a 10 if the manga had already been completed with a fitting end.

Pastel Note: Still ongoing in Japan
9/10
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Ecchi, Romance, Slice of Life, Harem (arguable)

Summary: Tadano Mugi is heartbroken after his girlfriend moves away… To ease his troubled heart, he decides to work in a beachside snack bar owned by his best friend’s family during the summer. While working one day, he accidentally catches a cute girl undressing. Instead of being mad at Mugi though, this peculiar girl smiles and makes him pay for peeping at her. The next day, while Mugi is wondering whether he would ever see this girl again, his best friend Kazuki sets him up on a date. As fate would have it, Mugi gets to meet Tsukisaski Yuu, the girl he had seen! But, after accidentally walking in on Yuu in the bath, he ends up on her bad side. Before he can apologize though, he learns that Yuu has left the island…
Being unable to apologize properly to the beautiful Yuu, Mugi vows to search high and low to find her again. He quickly gives up though and decides to go back home. However, that is when he finds Yuu where he was the least expecting it… in his bath! It turns out that Tsukisaki Yuu and her younger sister, Tsukasa, will now be living with him. How will these three get along?

Thoughts: You know, I have absolutely no idea why I'm reading this. Maybe it's because of the slow paced story (I'm a bit slow so slow pace is good for me) or because I'm curious as to what will happen in the future. But whatever the reason, I'm still reading this as my 3rd favorite manga.

Mahou Sensei Negima Note:Not even close to finishing in Japan
9.5/10
Genre: Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, School Life, Harem, Magic, Sci-fi, Romance, Action

Summary: Negi Springfield is a 10 year old magician prodigy from Wales. When it turns out his real world assignment in order to become a full fledged Magister Magi is an English teacher in Japan, this is just the beginning of what will be a wild ride. It turns out that the school, Mahora Academy, is an all girls school. His class: 31 girls of various personalities, interests, and backgrounds. One girl in particular that isn't too keen about his being their teacher, Asuna Kagurazaka. On top of that, he must keep his identity of being a magi secret. Add an ermine, magical cards, some ecchi-ness, and lots of laughs, and you have what has already proven to be a huge hit among anime and manga fans.

Thoughts: Latest manga series by Akamatsu Ken! I've been following the manga ever since I read Love Hina. When I started, I continued reading it because it was slightly funny, although I don't think that it's as funny as Love Hina. Still, as the story progressed, I got more hooked up by the action and magic. Even though I don't really care for art, the artwork was simply one of the best. Akamatsu was careful on the details, and made a lot of planning. And, despite of having a manga filled with more than 30+ characters, you can somehow know all their differences. Heck, even the twins! Very Happy It doesn't matter if you're not a romance, ecchi or action fan. Negima is one manga that you do not want to miss.

BLEACH (still going)Rerated by GuestLol
Genre: Shonen, Supernatural, Action
Rating:9/10

Summary:Ichigo Kurosaki is a rough-and-tumble teenager who has always had the special ability to see spirits. The story begins with the sudden appearance of an oddly-dressed stranger in Ichigo's bedroom. This stranger is the shinigami Rukia Kuchiki, who is surprised at his ability to see her. Their resulting conversation is interrupted by the appearance of a hollow, an evil spirit. After Rukia is severely wounded during battle trying to protect Ichigo, she decides to transfer half of her powers to Ichigo, hoping to give him the opportunity to face the hollow on an equal footing. Ichigo absorbs almost all of Rukia's powers during the attempt instead, allowing him to defeat the hollow with ease.

Thoughts: BLEACH IS AWESOME! First thought that came into my mind while reading this manga. Every day for 2 days I would go to my computer, overload a manga download host and start reading non stop. This is definitely a staple of action manga. Bottom line, I love the story, the action, and Rukia's awesome drawings! <3. READ THIS

Ai-Ren
9/10

Genres: Supernatural, Romance, Slice of Life

Plot Summary
Ikuru is a terminally ill patient in post- (or mid-) apocalyptic Japan, Having had half his body destroyed in an accident many years ago. There is a special program of treatment available for terminally ill, called AGH-RMS (Ai-Ren for short), which creates a genetically modified behavior in a reanimated body with a fresh memory to accompany and relieve the terminally ill until their death. Ai, as Ikuru names her, lives out the 11 months of her short life expectancy with Ikuru in a small house removed from everything else, whilst around them a fierce war rages.

Thoughts
Much like SaiKano, Ai-Ren shows the futility of man and war, just without much of the fighting. The ending is hollow yet complete, and despite "aliens" being somewhat a part of the storyline, this could very well be where mankind is heading towards, which is what struck me the most. The love between Ai and Ikuru is genuine and warming, and the story flickers between these heartwarming moments and others of stark reality.

Gantz rated by HolyCow

Genre: Shounen, Gore
Synopsis: Kurono Kei is a high school student who got run over by a train one day together with his friend Katou. Instead of dying, however, the both of them are transported into a room with a large black sphere. There, they find out that they are forced to participate in a deadly game of survival, as the sphere, known only as GANTZ, orders them to exterminate aliens...

Thoughts: Badass. This is probably the most provocative manga I have ever come across, with lots of violence, blood, gore and for-no-reason sex. Seriously. You haven't seen gore if you haven't seen GANTZ.

Rating: 8/10

Elfen Lied Rated by HolyCow

Genre: Shounen, Philosophy, GORE
Synopsis: In a high security lab, a mutant known only as a 'diclonius' manages to break free from her cell, before proceeding to murder everyone in sight using a seemingly invisible weapon. She is eventually taken out by a bullet in her head, which is partially deflected by her protective helmet. This causes her to fall into the sea, as those in charge frantically race to bring her back before all hell breaks loose...

Thoughts: The manga starts off quite differently form the anime. In the manga, we get to see Lucy's cage, and how she managed to break free. The lab director guy also seems more emo in the manga, and that's a good thing. It's still as deep as the anime was, and isn't stingy on the gore either. IMO, however, the philosophical meaning behind this manga is much more of a reason to read this than the gore factor is.

Rating:8/10

GOTH Rated by HolyCow

Genre: Psychological Horror, Slight mystery, gore
Synopsis: A series of stories revolving around 'Boku' and his female classmate Morino Yoru. The both of them are obsessed with death, and are otherwise known as 'GOTH's - humans interested with the dark side of nature.

Thoughts: If possible, I'd recommend the NOVEL (which we're translating atm) before the manga, simply because the novel has much more depth. The manga is a heavily watered down version, and doesn't really portray the psychological horror factor as well as the novel does. This is by no means a bad manga though, containing some scenes of explicit gore (Nanami comes to mind), as well as Morino Yoru, one of the most moe characters I have ever come across Razz

Rating: 7.5/10

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rated by HolyCow

Genre: Mystery, Slight horror, gore
Synopsis: Maebara Keiichi (The 1diot who's leading the most annoying male character polls right now)has just moved to the quiet village of Hinamizawa. After he learns of a dam-construction murder and a mysterious 'curse' by a certain shrine god, however, things begin to take a turn, as his newfound friends may not be who they seem to be...

Thoughts: Higurashi has one of the most brilliant plots I've ever come across, as well as one of the most unique presentations (parallel stories). It's much more detailed than the anime (and much better drawn too), but is heavily laden with text, so you might want to watch the anime for a brief understanding of the story first, before coming back to read the manga for more tips (and finally heading over to the AnimeSuki TIPS translation section if you're really interested). It isn't as gory as the ones mentioned above, ut still has some rather disturbing torture scenes, so I'd classify it as gore nonetheless Cool

Thoughts: I would sell this to you for less than your dog's feces. But, I need money so I can pay for a hypnotist to erase my memory of this horrid series that JUST DOESN'T DIE! LIKE THE THIRD LOTR MOVIE! DIE DAMN IT! >_<

Plus I'm bitter, I hate the ending.

I"s
7/10

Thoughts: Another craptastic series. There aren't any gundams or rocket launchers at all. Plus the main character drinks underage at one point, a fine influence for the younger generation. It's only saving grace is that it's only 12 volumes and the drawing is very well done.

Dan's idea of a fine influence for the younger generation involves genocide, violence, bad plotlines, and grand theft mecha.

Dan does not realise that he himself is writing a story which shares many similarities with I"s.

Dan is secretly a hippo.

Let me rate... erm.... hrmmm........................

Kilico
omgwtf/10
Plot: man giant kill people become police kill more people but people try to kill him so he kill more people and girl kill people too so they kill people together but girl kills man anyway for no reason.

Review: Honestly, I didn't know what to make of this at first. It's like Jiraishin's main character fusion-ed with Arnie Swarzhenfuhrer. Art takes some getting used to. Story is modicorum. I mean, it's a pretty likable manga.

EXCEPT THE ENDING IS HORRIBLE. This ending is, believe it or not, worse than Strawberry 100%. There's absolutely no cohesion between what was supposed to be the climax and the shockingly sudden ending. It's too bad for words. If there be a reason to read this manga, it's because of the bad-beyond-words finale.

My story is nothing like I"s, I am completely, absolutely, 100% devoted to Yuki!

And you said it was worth reading because of the awful ending? I'll just skip to that part then! :o

No no, you must read the whole story! then the ending would be meaningful. You'd know this because you'd be wondering where the remaining chapters are.

Btw, please rate all mangas with proper scores, proper language, and do not discriminate against them because of not having item X or not having XXX, etc. Just because the ending is upsetting and not what you like doesn't mean it sucks. The ending works well because it stirs the mind of the reader.

If there's a [X] beside the manga, I will probably re-review it myself or get Ben to write a review for me cause I'm lazy.
