Just pulling your chain a bit. I haven't had the pleasure of traveling up there yet. Hope the loggers haven't demolished the forests before I get there. From what I saw flying over on the way back from Europe last time, they were working hard enough to shame the Brazilians in the Amazon rain forest :(

Well, at least there's a 'cut a tree, plant another' here, while in Brazil they are all euphalyctus.

BOT, has a licence held by Tokyopop been taken?

I hope they are replanting. It sure didn't look like it from 40,000ft.

As far as I know, all the licenses fall back to the original (Japanese) publishers. It really depends. TokyoPop might hold on to the licenses if it doesn't cost them anything to keep them, if the entire cost was paid up front. If there is any ongoing cost to keep the licenses, I suspect they would drop them like hot potatoes.

Did Tokyopop seriously closed because of debt?

It appears that they keep separate sets of books for the various parts of the company, and the publishing part was losing money in large part because of the relationship they had with Borders Books. Borders had invested in TokyoPop, and was a big customer of theirs. But because Borders is suffering from the combined effects of the Great Recession and Amazon, they withdrew their investment in TokyoPop and stopped paying quite a few of their bills, including what they owed TokyoPop. All of a sudden, the publishing division was losing money, and there was no turnaround in sight. So they decided to cut their losses and get out of the business altogether.

Frankly, do anyone know if there's a situation similar to Tokyopop? I don't expect Hachette being broke (my textbooks actually come from them) and Viz looks...mighty.

Hachette and Viz both are huge companies, so I do not expect anything from them anytime soon. I know that Funimation has been in talks for a while about being sold from their parent company, but nothing has really emerged from that as of yet. Most of the other licensing companies here in the United States are backed by larger parent companies.

Well, currently, I think that they are the largest licensing company by a long shot in terms of the number of licenses for anime series. If they go down like Tokyopop without anyone to pick up the slack, that will probably be the end of the anime industry for the English-speaking audience as far as legit things go. That would put us back in the "Stone Age" so to speak.

"Start again," he says. It never ended. Actually, it has grown in recent years.
