You pay a fixed sum depending on where you live and what you buy (e.g. if you live in Europe and buy novels, that sum is 3400 yen) plus 300 yen for each item. Here's the FAQ entry btw.. That's exactly why I prefer bk1:

Let's assume you buy 10 books. That would make 6400 yen at Amazon (3400 + 10 * 300). At bk1, however, you pay according to this table and a light novel is considered to weigh about 200g, meaning that 10 novels cost only 4600~5400 yen in terms of shipment. Besides, as mentioned before, they offer a handful of other shipping methods. For instance, if you live in the USA, you can use FedEx, which would cost about 3000 yen for my example.

Well, you get the package within a few days, it's traceable, and it's insured.
But then again, there are cheaper shipping methods like SAL, but personally I feel a little anxious when ordering big packages uninsured to the other side of the globe.
