Soul Calibur

Post by HexOmega »

Started playing 5 a bit ago, and I'm sure (at least hope) someone else here plays as well. So I figured this would be a good place to discuss favorite characters, tourny rotations, custom characters and the like.
As of now my favorite character would have to be Viola, due to the fact she looks awesome, and is one of the most difficult characters I have ever seen (which always makes it more fun to learn how to play)

I have played and own Soul Cal 2-4, but I have not been able to get 5 yet. I want to do so though. From what I have seen, I am really impressed. However, I wish that 5 had a tutorial mode like in the DOA games that lets you know that you actually nailed a move. I do not know if it has this; if it does, great - if not, well...

5 is both really good, and kind of awful. The online is great (barely any lag issues) the animations are good as always, and the game is fun. the problems are that so many characters got really odd nerfs and buffs, like Mitsurugi, who lost 2 stances, and became one of the most predictable characters in the game. Nightmare is horrendously overpowered as always, but even easier to play. So this one has a lot more noob spammers, but if you pay attention their really easy to beat. The campaign is godawful, but needed to unlock a few characters and the like, and the training is pretty much the same as always. The game won't say if you landed a move, but you can watch the animation slide to know yourself.

Interesting. Watching the animation slide show is a pain in the butt for me.

Eh, I personally dislike the training in all of them, because they build bad habits. I prefer a trial by fire method, where you get online and just try your best.

They can give you bad habits, but it is nice to be able to know certain moves and be able to repeat them - of course, all at the expense of your foe.

Yea, but trying to use the moves in "high stress" situations (playing against real people) is difficult if you only learned in training. If you find them out while playing against real people, you have a better chance to do it again.

I think that depends on the player really.

Very true, I just seem to do better in more stressful situations.

That is typically the opposite of how I do, although there are some exceptions to that as well.

Yea, just the feeling of losing pisses me off and makes me focus a bit more.

I wish. While I'm pretty good around where I live, some people on live just curb-stomp me and tournies are still reallly hard to play in. I just cant afford an X hundred dollar game pad or a controller with preset combo buttons. It takes the fun and skill out of the game. (I would love a basic gamepad though)

Playing on X-Box Live or any of the networks is never that much fun for me because people are too competitive there. I have found that you are more likely to meet jerks and losers that live in their mother's basements with no lives there than elsewhere. For me, it is much more fun to meet up with friends and play.

As for the game pad/controller, agreed. I am more into finding a good controller that has good response times and does not act buggy. It is amazing how hard that is to find nowadays.

Funny just download a dreamcast emulator to play old DC games. One of them is SC.
