@ 6 GB or so: You mean RAM right? what if you (ab)use the filesystem and use folders to act as indexing? that way you preserve the speed of reading from memory (because you only read small portions from disk at a time) and also speed up start up, while allowing puny macbooks with only 2GB of RAM to be able to ATTEMPT using wine. (if you meant 6 GB of storage then nvm.)
I avoid virtualizing programs in that way, since it kills performance. This applications needs the speed. Even as it is, it takes about two minutes to digest the dictionary (conjugating and indexing) before it actually starts working on parsing text.

The new parser is stingy on memory, but it isn't ready yet.

As an example of how many conjugations get generated, take a look at this sample. This is just one verb, and as I've said before, not all possibilities are currently being covered.

Two reasons: First, once the verbs and adjectives are conjugated, the dictionary expands enormously, from ~150K entries to over five million. Secondly, wasted space. Without getting too technical, the text elements are stored in a C++ construct called a "basic_string", and they are all cross-indexed with another type of C++ construct referred to as a "map". From my point of view, both constructs are ridiculously wasteful of space. Unfortunately, building an alternative is quite a chore. I know: I've done that (a replacement for "map") for my real job, earlier this year. That code is not in my parser for legal reasons, and because I haven't gotten around to it.

If anybody's interested, I've updated the program, adding support for what I call the "Plain Progressive Conjunctive" conjugation, which is basically the te-form of a verb immediately followed by いて, or contracted to て, changing the conjunctive (te-form) to its continuous action form.

I needed to this to properly deal with してて, for example.

The updated program may be downloaded from http://mywebpages.comcast.net/rpapo/Nihongo.zip.

Warning: because of this, it does even more conjugations, and consumes even more memory than before. The conjugated dictionary is now around 6.1M entries.

I spent the better part of a day chasing down the excess memory consumption, found one major reason and fixed it. Now, a normal run requires about 3Gb rather than 5Gb of RAM. Still an awful lot, and it spends a lot of time in setting up the dictionary, but it is more tolerable than before.

I tried to expand the verb conjugations so that both the Potential and the Causative tenses could be then conjugated as if they were Ichidan verbs, but that increased the load enormously. Oh well, that will have to wait for the new parser, once I get back to it.

The updated source code is in the usual place.

Well, that drop in RAM means I could run it with my barebones setup, but I get the interesting problem........

I have Visual Studios [Express] 2010, however, I only have the VB one and Windows installer crashes. I've also tried about 3 different versions of possibility for 2008.

Know of any other programs I can use, or should I start breaking out my sledgehammer threats?

(Also, I don't know if part of the problem is being 32-bit, but I wouldn't assume it would be a drastic one, especially not installing these programs...)

My source code is for Visual Studio 2008, on an X64 system. It really needs more than 2Gb of available memory.

Yeah, I can put up the memory.

Basically Windows is being a shamisen. I think that is the best way to put it. I can't uninstall and C++ Redistributable Packages, and I can't install Visual Studios C++.

I'll look more into this, if anyone has any similar problems.

I thought of trying this after seeing it mentioned in the wiki section. You need to do more advertising.

Anyway, I got an error after it said:
Processing Document.
not found <.jumanrc> file in your home directory.

What am I missing?

Also, some kind of config file would be nice, to stop it from rebuilding the dictionary on every run and things.

I don't really want to advertise heavily something that is far from complete, as far as I'm concerned. It's a useful tool for me, but I haven't spent the time necessary to make it what I would like to see it be: an interactive tool for dissecting Japanese, and perhaps even suggesting possible translations based on that dissection.

Well, it would appear you were trying to run Nihongo.exe from the wrong location. When I set a breakpoint in the code just before that error message would have been generated, I found that on my system the file was found at "C:\PROJECTS\Nihongo\Juman-5.1\dic\jumanrc", "C:\PROJECTS\Nihongo" is my working directory. FWIW, this particular section of code was not my creation: I have incorporated the public project JUMAN to provide an alternate parsing to mine. JUMAN seems to be what is used by Google Translate as their parser. I know this because both my copy of JUMAN and their parsing tends to result in the same errors. My parser is not as smart as JUMAN, but has a far bigger dictionary: JDICT. So, which one is more correct tends to vary. JUMAN wins sometimes, my parser wins sometimes. Most of the time they agree with each other, in spite of how primitive my parser's algorithm is.
Xplorer30 wrote:Also, some kind of config file would be nice, to stop it from rebuilding the dictionary on every run and things.
Well, it might be possible to speed things up a little, if we save the result of digesting JDICT as two files: Dictionary.txt and Index.txt, and then simply loading those two text files at startup. It would still be a slow startup, though. The generated dictionary is HUGE. In either case the memory consumption would wind up about the same.

Thanks for the quick reply. You are right about this program still need to be worked on a bit more. I moved the folder to the above directory and it worked. Wonder who programs such direct set folder locations. Most people would have used the current run folder as a root? Oh, would there be a problem if I move Nihongo.exe to the Nihongo folder?

Anyway, it works but it seems I need a faster comp to run it on than my crappy vista laptop. Took a few minutes to go through my 15 lines of test file. Now I need to learn to read the result output file.

Re-reading the dictionary and index file that your program generated is slower than reading the jdic file and generating those said files? That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, but whichever is faster I guess.

You would also have to move or copy JUMAN.DLL too. An alternative: create yourself a shortcut to Nihongo.exe and set the working directory to the project root. The project root does not need to be c:\Projects\Nihongo.

Try Windows 7. It'll run faster than Vista any day, on the same hardware, especially if you're already running the X64 version.

This application needs to load the dictionary and the index into sorted structures, and that takes time. The time saved would be in the initial dictionary load, where we are generating tons of verbal/adjectival conjugations. Anyway, it wouldn't hurt trying that possibility: have a "Generate Dictionary" mode where the conjugations are generated and a text version of the dictionary and index files would be saved to disk. Then for normal operation it would simply reload (and reindex) those files.

In any case, I don't think it will happen this weekend. Apart from trying to keep my normal translation pace, I have a ton of stuff to do not at all related to B-T, but rather to home, family and job.

I know what you mean by busy. I have slowed down a lot lately due to real life issues too for my own BT project of Accel World.

Whenever you can get to the config file thing or switches is fine. I just find it a bit strange to have the exe files burried so deep inside the folders. Meanwhile, I might try giving it a full OCR dump script file and see how long that takes.

As for changing OS, I will probably do it if I get a new comp. My vista laptop is mostly for web browsing and opening script files for translating on Google Docs.

You can put all that in a shortcut too. In my case, I set the parameters in the debugger configuration page in Visual Studio, since I always run this program from inside Visual Studio myself.
Xplorer30 wrote:I just find it a bit strange to have the exe files burried so deep inside the folders.
That's the way Microsoft Visual Studio does things by default. It gives them the ability to build versions of a program for multiple hardware platforms (Win32, X64) and multiple build types (debug, release) and have all the resultant versions available on disk at the same time. You run only one of them, of course.
Xplorer30 wrote:Meanwhile, I might try giving it a full OCR dump script file and see how long that takes.
That may take a while. I normally do one to two pages at a time.

Haha, it got to line 420 and crashed with:
(null): can't open JUMAN.grammar .

It might have ran out of my comp memory. But it gave me a 4 meg output text file.

Here is the last line in my output file, if it helps:
