Does anyone know if a MKV takes more place on a hard drive or less place compared to an AVI?

It'll depend on the bitrate and if there's subs or not

But on average, AVIs should be smaller

MKV and AVI are containers. One can't say they are smaller or bigger than each other without considering their content, just like how you can't say a generic metallic box is larger than a plastic box.

The size depends on the content inside the container. MKV is a newer standard used by recent encoders, so the streams encoded tends to have a higher quality and higher bitrate, given better sources and better internet speed.

On the other hand many AVI files are from quite a few years ago. They might be encoded from inferior sources. Also the encoders were also forced to take into account the slow modem speed at that time and consequently further pushed down the file size.

For subtitles, soft subs are just text files that occupy only a few kb. For hardsubs they are literally part of the video stream. The size of video streams is ultimately determined by the bitrate.

ben and Doraneko are both correct. However, to give a shorter and less complex answer, MKV usually will take more space than AVI, if we are talking about the typical file seen on the torrent sites. Currently, MKV are more commonly used for HQ video and torrents, which will take more space. So, if space is a concern for you, I would suggest looking for AVI files, although this obviously has multiple downsides to it.

And the difference between XVID and H264 then? Which is better?

A lot of things like my psp or dvd player can't play xvid

Nowadays, almost everything can play h264.

Video quality depends on the bitrate like usual but expect h264 to use more space and look better.
