What is a rhetorical question? Sorry, I'm at least 10 years of English lower than you...

A "rhetorical question" is a question where the person asking is not necessarily looking for an answer from the audience the he/she is speaking to/with at the moment that the question is asked. Rather, the speaker knows the answer that they desire and only use the question as a means to help communicate the point and provoke further thought on the matter. Most of the time, the question's answer is self-evident, especially if the audience has followed the speaker's argument and logic to build up to that point. Other times, rhetorical questions are used for sarcastic purposes or just to be a smart-mouth like mine was. However, it does not follow that the question cannot serve for both purposes. An example of a rhetorical question would be something like this:

A: "Would you like to go to the beach?"

B: "Is the sky blue?"

So, obviously, the answer from most people would be, "Yes." Person B is not looking so much for a response as to signify a certain understanding that they have.
