@Khaleel: It sounds like the way history and geography is taught in Brazil is a(n) (over)reaction to various parts of history and expressions used. I know that many Central and South Americans are offended when people refer to the United States as "America," forgetting that other countries make up America as a whole. Does this have to do anything with it you think?

You will get B+. That's because have bad teachers, teachers who are not qualified to teach. Now, imagine how is it in Peru, Ecuador,Venezuela, Bolivia...Yeah.

But, we usally call them "norte americano"(north-american, incorrect, of course) or "estado(state) unidense(...damn...Very difficult to translate or find a equal term...)" to people from USA. Canadians are Canadians, but some people can confuse Canadians with Americans.

@Khaleel: You do not need to sweat it. I took Spanish in high school, and the terms in Spanish and Portuguese are similar for the United States. In Spanish, it is Estados Unidos or EEUU for short.

@kira: I actually got a laugh out of both of perspectives. I have seen much, much worse.
