Shakugan no Shana:Volume3 Summary
Volume III
A month passed since the Corpse Collector left the city.
A gang of bullies attempt to steal money from a foreign-looking young boy. They were interrupted by a girl wearing a strange antique dress who seemed to be his sister and a robust grey-haired man dressed in a black coat and sunglasses. After attempting to attack the strangers, the bullies get sliced instantly by their previous victim, the boy, who's now wearing a shiny armor and wielding a long and heavy sword. It's revealed that the three of them are Crimson DenizensGuze no Tomogara, inhabitants of the Crimson Realm that head to Earth in order to steal Power of Existence from the numerous humans, for some unknown purpose.
They "ate" the powers of existence from the bullies, who were reduced to torches. A torch is a person's shell that remains to avoid the distortion that a sudden disappearance may create. The people that are in contact with a torch start to forget the torch as the torch gradually loses its powers of existence. When the torch burns away, it is as if the original person never existed. Since the bullies were eaten outside of a SealFūzetsu, the Flame Hazes nearby could not sense it.
Meanwhile, Shana, the Flame Haze "Flame-Haired Blazing-Eyed HunterEnpatsu Shakugan no Uchite" that fights the Crimson DenizensGuze no Tomogara using the power of the Crimson LordGuze no Ō Alastor, now trains every night with Sakai Yūji by her side. Sakai Yūji is a Mystes - a torch that carries a Treasure ToolHōgu inside him. Since they discovered that this Treasure ToolHōgu was the Midnight Lost ChildReiji Maigo, which has the ability that at midnight all the Power of Existence used in the day is fully restored, Yūji provides her with Power of Existence to use. This is also why Yūji does not disappear like the other torches. On one of those nights, Shana notices that he is too quiet and worried, so she asks him what's wrong. Yūji tries to hide his affections that weren't matured yet but ends up showing them when he requests her to stay with him forever. At this request, she becomes speechless and takes him back to his room, answering that it isn't the moment to talk about that. The next day, confused by this event, the Flame Haze came to Chigusa, Yūji's mother, with whom she had formed a bond of trust, and asked "What's the meaning of a kiss?" Shocked by this, Alastor holds back a gasp from inside of the Cocytus, the container in which his existence was kept and from where his voice comes from, begging in his mind for the woman in front of him to give a satisfactory answer. After thinking for a while, Chigusa answered that it wasn't something that you could express with words, that it was a symbol of affection that is later turned into a promise if it was on the lips. Then, Chigusa asks Shana whether she would like to kiss Yūji, causing a blush on Shana and an obviously negative answer. The boy's mother says that Shana must not let herself get kissed so simply, and that if her son tries something, just punch him in the face. Alastor remains worried.
After that event, Shana, who now has taken over the existence of Hirai Yukari - Yūji's classmate that became a torch recently, learns how to live a normal life while keeping an eye on the Mystes in order to protect him from Crimson DenizensGuze no Tomogara that may try to take the Treasure ToolHōgu inside him. She normally acts cold and sometimes angry with him, since he makes her feel awkward she didn't know the cause of it due to her lack of knowledge about human relationships. After a dodge-ball match, she found Yūji in the hands of Yoshida, a female classmate that was taking care of his injury after he was hit by the ball. This almost takes her head out of the game, not knowing that this was the reason for which one he got eliminated after seeing a boy trying to talk with her. However, the person that was making a stand against Shana's team was Tanaka Eita, a tall athletic guy that knowing her physical skills tried to take advantage of her despite it. Back with her mind on the game and during middle of the rain, Shana lets him taste the power of a Flame Haze with a false throw into the fang and fast launches it directed to his face. As everyone got their clothes and hair covered with mud, the girls and the boys takes turns for showers, Yūji and his best friend, Ike, are designated and somehow obligated to stand guard at the door during the girl's bath. At this moment, after a conversation concerning Yoshida and her love interest on Yūji, he is asked if he likes Hirai, the name for which one Ike knew her. At this question, the astonished Yuji responds that he doesn't have a good answer at the moment. Later on during the same day, Ike finds Yoshida and asks what was her reason for loving Yūji, thinking that the event in the same month on the physical education class was it. Ike becomes surprised that she liked Sakai Yuji since the first day of class, when they met. Trying to help his friend to get a moment to talk with her love interest, Ike gives her Yūji's umbrella that he forgot, and suggested to deliver it back to him at his home.
Back to the classroom, Yuji sees Shana again, amongst the flock of girls that seemed to be trying to invite her to the cinema. Displeased because how she totally forgot that a few days ago, she asked him to take her to the city's bakery's in order to buy fresh melon bread, he roughly reminds her this and she stays mute annoyed by this fact.
While they walk their way to their respective houses, Shana notices his anger and after running out of answers, she complains about how he spends time with Yoshida Kazumi during the physical education class. Now changing to a defensive posture, Yūji tries to explain it but accidentally leaks out the jealousy that he felt after seeing her with another guy. Surprised by how he noticed it and felt the same about her after seeing him with Kazumi, Shana blushed while hiding her face. After this discussion, they went to assist the bakery as planned. The silence is broken by Alastor's voice, whom as Shana's guardian noticed the atmosphere between them and acted immediately afterwards, with a request.
Another Flame Haze was living in Misaki City as well, a weird circumstance for lonely individuals that rarely like to cooperate with each other, as their characters are aggressive, and sometimes end up fighting one another. And it did end up like that. Shana fought her, Margery Daw, the Interpreter of Condolence contracted by Fangs and Claws of Violation, Marcosias. She was defeated and this hurt her body and her mind, destroying her will to continue fighting. Now staying in Keisaku Satou's house, whom along with Tanaka Eita have become her followers, spends a great part of her time drinking and sleeping. These two young boys were in the same class as Shana and Yūji, who Margery knew personally, but didn't know that they were the ones that made this for her. So it was a weird circumstance as well. After noticing the wound on Eita's face and asking how it occurred, the boys were required to say the truth about their loss. Before they were able to make excuses, Margery announces that wants to go to the commercial center, so both of them must skip classes the next day.
Meanwhile, the three Denizens that continued eating humans' Power of Existence, using a weird treasure tool that allowed them to avoid being detected. The two brothers, Aizenta Tiriel and Aizenji Sorath, had a childish mentality, in which one Tiriel would do anything for the other brother's happiness, but the objects that he looked for always ended up boring him. As he had the ability of sensing anything he wants no matter where it is at, his infantile desires took him to search for a sword, the Nietono no Shana, the Hōgu that was used for the Flame Haze of the same name. As protection was needed, Tiriel contracted Senpen Sydonay, a bodyguard who has vast skills and experience. Every time they stopped to steal some power of existence, she set a torch with a Jizaiho, to use it later in to set up the treasure's owner.
Following Alastor's instructions, Yūji bought a cellphone and placed the Cocytus inside of it, after this he asked Shana to give it to Chigusa without explaining his reasons and told them to go out while he had a conversation with the woman. During this conversation, presenting himself as Shana's guardian, he asks Chigusa to avoid explaining things that could guide to a relationship between her and Sakai Yūji. Chigusa, noticing the reason for his call, explains in a gentle voice that the reason for which she spoke with Shana was to protect her from the seduction of any guy or even her own son, while saying that even if she was a strong girl, deep down inside she was insecure and didn't have much experience with human relationships. Surprised by the wise answer, Alastor now asks the woman if it wasn't too early to be teaching her that, and received the answer that problems do not come when expected and it is never too early when preparing for them. After apologizing for his rude behaviour, he asks at last to keep her advice and forget his complaint, explaining that even after living so long between humans, he still didn't understand them completely, taking this as a joke, Chigusa agreed.
While this was happening, the topic's protagonist were guiding Yūji to somewhere without explaining why. After stopping, they see the stars in the sky, that reflected on the Misaki's river seemed to be twice its side. Understanding the reason of their arrive there, he just answers that was a wonderful view and that he wants to see more of them, repeating the same request of the other night. Shana just smiles this time and tell him to put the best on his training. Unknowing that Kazumi observed them from the distance while she was heading to Yūji's house to give him back the umbrella the he forgot. After coming back to home and asking Alator what happened, he just orders Shana to listen every word from the miss and to Yūji to don't shame his mother. At this words, they look each other confused.
Next day, Ike gets to the classroom earlier than usual and finds Yoshida crying on the window, who after noticing him smiles to hide her tears. Later on during lunch time, both of them invite Sakai and Hirai to have a picnic on the roof. While Yūji was eating the bento that Kazumi made for him, Ike explodes with indignation saying that was unfair to Yoshida when he accepts her good will and hangs out with Hirai at the same time, explaining that he saw them both in the bridge the other night.
In another part of the town, the three Denizens were obligated to reveal their identity after Sorath killed a boy and his mother to get a toy that he was holding, all of this outside of any shield, so the public civilians who witnessed this scene ran scared and the Flame Haze close to the mall, Margery Daw, sensed the distortion and after ordering her minions to head towards the Harigan, makes her own way to the scene. As if it were nothing, they started to eat existences of the surrounding people , trying to get the Nietono no Shana's owner's attention, but the only one that appeared was the Interpreter of Condolence, after finding each other, Marcosias recognizes the Aizens and Margery meets her old rival once again, Sydonay, while fighting, Sorath realizes that she doesn't have the treasure and that everthing was a waste of time. Dividing their forces, Tiriel and his brother go looking for the other Flame Haze while Senpen stays to fight.
Without any excuse at his friend's words, Yūji becomes speechless, while Shana doesn't seem to pay attention, however Yoshida suddenly asks Ike to stop and runs out saying that she didn't ask for that. With a tense atmosphere, Shana is asked to leave by her partner, to which she obeys but surprised by the scene. When alone, Ike explains that the one who saw them together was Kazumi and not him, and apologizes for his behaviour. A question escaped out of Yūji's mouth, asking him if he was in love with her. But then the whole time seemed to have stopped, in a yellow-like shine, a Jizaiho appeared.
While all this is happening, Shana has her own confrontation with Yoshida, who now was determined to express her feelings openly to Yūji, calling Hirai a cheater because she liked him too and was very scared to get hurt to admit it, Shana realizes that the meaning of all these feelings that she had before, the extreme pain in her chest for the preoccupation of losing after this girl. She confessed that her feelings for Yūji were also strong. But then, the same spells get to the school and the conversation is interrupted. Unsettled by these new feelings and facing her rival, Shana states that she isn't going to lose, she wasn't going to lose in front of her and that Yūji and herself have much more in common than all what Yoshida could ever get. After saying this, she takes her sword out and transforms into the Flaming-Haired-Blazing-Eyes Hunter, ready to fight the enemy.
