Riddle[edit]

"Hey, hey~ Yozora, Yozora! I'll do your homework for you if you gimmie some potato chips!"

One day after school, Yozora and Maria were alone together in the Neighbors Club room.

Maria had already wolfed down three bags of potato chips while murmuring complaints about her older sister under her breath, on account of having been yelled at by said older sister earlier in the day.

"I don't have any homework today."

Yozora curtly replied to Maria, who had just come back begging for more potato chips.

Every once in a while, Yozora would have Maria do her homework and other miscellaneous chores in exchange for potato chips.

As for why Yozora gave her potato chips, it was because the owner of the store Yozora worked part-time at would occasionally give Yozora huge bundles of potato chips she won at the pachinko parlor. Apparently the owner was under the impression that she liked them. Seeing as how she got them for free, Yozora could have simply passed the chips along to Maria, but she figured she might as well use this chance to train her instead.

"Oh, okay... So no more potato chips today (´・ω・`)"

Yozora let out a sigh after seeing Maria's sad reaction, and said,

"...Fine, if you can answer this question I'll give you some potato chips."

Maria's face lit up like a light bulb.

"Really!? What kinda question!? Don't worry, I'm a genius, even if it's a hard question you can't figure out, I can solve it in a flash!"

"...I see. Here goes then... What can't you eat for breakfast?"

Yozora's plan was to just give Maria the chips to quiet her down, so she gave her a simple riddle to solve.

"Something you can't eat for breakfast!? What kinda food is that!?"

Maria's eyes bulged out in surprise.

"Hrmm... This is a hard problem to solve..."

After seeing Maria fold her arms and start thinking with a pensive look on her face, Yozora thought to herself, amused, that this girl really is an idiot.

"Something you can't eat for breakfast... Hrmm... A-a rotten breakfa——"

Wanting to simply end this little game already, Yozora decided to just tell her that was the right answer.

"Corr——"

"——No, that's not it..."

"Eh?"

"...Even if it's rotten and has mold growing on it, sometimes you just have to eat what's on your plate... Otherwise you'll starve... That's just reality... Hrm... This is hard..."

...What do I do, I don't know if I can tell her that the answer is just "lunch and dinner" now, Yozora thought to herself.

Maria continued to moan while twisting her neck around until...

"I got it!"

She raised her hand all of a sudden.

"W-what is it?"

"I think we all need to work together to make a peaceful world abundant with food where everyone can afford to throw away their rotten breakfast with mold on it and buy some other safe and tasty food, rather than have to risk getting sick eating old food just to survive!"

"Y-yeah... S-sure...?"

Why does she have to be smart only at times like this... Yozora thought to herself as a cold sweat formed on her brow.

"Is that the right answer!?" Maria asked with a pair of sparkling eyes.

Her answer wasn't even close to the correct one, but Yozora still went, "...Hmph." and reached into her bag.

"Ohh!?" exclaimed Maria with a look of pure joy on her face.

The item Yozora had grabbed from her bag was not a bag of potato chips, but instead a bar of chocolate she'd bought for herself earlier.

She broke it in half, and gave one piece to Maria.

"You can have this, since I'm feeling nice today. Be thankful."

"Ohhh!?" Maria's eyes opened wide as she looked back and forth at the chocolate and Yozora's face.

"What's going on Yozora!? Have you finally seen the error of your ways!?"

"Be quiet and take it already."

"Okay! ——Agya......!? Aghh..."

Maria had a huge smile plastered on her face as she reached out for the chocolate, but all of a sudden it changed to a look of pain.

"Hm? What's wrong?"

"..................M-my tummy hurts... I need to... g-go poop..."

"Idiot, that's what you get for eating all those potato chips like a madman..."

Yozora watched as Maria staggered her way out of the clubroom with a look of pity in her eyes.

Maria returned 10 minutes later, however it was neither potato chips nor chocolate, but stomach medicine that Yozora gave her.
