The dialogue in Horizon is as heavy as any narration.

That said, as I said before, it's not difficult at all.

I just have trouble twisting syntax to a readable form.

And aforementioned problems with POV jumping.

So just wondering, could someone please update the first post with the agreed upon values (with +/-x for ranges) for the things discussed? It'd be nice to have it all gathered in 1 place.

Thanks a lot!

Edit: it'd be nice if they were sorted in some way, either by name or by the rating. But just having it all in 1 place right now is great.

Everyone's scale is different. For me, it's a 2 or 3.

Thanks and BTW why do you guys rate DYD and itsuten only 1 and 2, is them that easy to read/translate ?

Edit: teh_ping rate it 1 and I know how insanely his specs are (Trans-am or not).

I was the one who rated it 1, because there's no LN on earth that can be easier to read. The only problem is, it can be awkward to translate at times, in a weird way. And remember it's a relative scale in my own perspective. Like I would have rated some other titles lower, but if I do that, DYD and Itsuten will go to negative scale.

I need to do a chapter of Shana and Monogatari (possibly Koi) one of these days so that I know where Mahouka stands. I have a feeling it will be a 6(+2) to read and 9 (+2) to translate. +2 for terminologies, need for research, and mechanics descriptions.

Well, it is a 2 for me, lower than Baka Test. Unicorn goes up from 4 to 9. (Must be drunk on teh ping or something when I rated it a 4, because there's no way it can be a 4.) The length's like 450 pages worth of LN text (since it's an actual novel), and it just felt like translating Shana all over again, except worse.

^ Well, unless you are using some kind of absolute scale that is defined according to some form of measure, otherwise, won't a '2' imply that there's something easier? (which I kind of doubt)

And good grief, or rather, thank Haruhi, I was shocked when you ranked Unicorn at 4, since I thought the description level of such a genre should make one's head spin.

Itsuten is a 1 for me as well.....and that's saying a lot about how easy it is...Never had more than a cursory interest in DYD so I wouldn't know about that...

How much time do you guys generally take to translate about 10 pages of level 3 Light novel?

And please be honest here.

2-3 hours I think... It usually takes me 6-8 hours to do an OreShura chapter which is like 25 pages, so that sounds about right.

I think the length of novel chapters also play a psychological role in the tier-list of translations. I'm definitely glad I started with OreShura, because the short chapters (25 pages a pop) are literally like a carrot-on-a-stick. They're quick to satisfy and prevent the translator from getting frustrated, etc.

If I had started with Sakurasou (80 pages a chapter) or Watashitachi no Tamura-kun (150+ pages a chapter)... I don't think I would have lasted very long. Frustration kicks in when you can't even finish a chapter after weeks of translating, and that's why we have some many half-finished teasers. xD

So yeah, I would personally recommend a first-time translator to try going for a novel that has shorter chapters. Translating novels is really a matter of endurance. You're better off attempting a 5k before you try running the marathon. xD I think I'm lucky to have stumbled upon OreShura my first time.
