Re: Baka-Television
additional pennies..
@ainsoph9: that analogy with crunchyroll was actually tasty food for thought.. back when crunchy had yet to license and prune most of its titles, imo it was mostly a rag-tag project with lots of involvement from fans and the big-time fansub groups out there.. after the legalities and licensing crackdown, crunchy may have lost a big piece of their fanbase, but it actually turned out to be a better venture over-all.. perhaps another analogy could be the issues with Animax Asia from even further back.. (though seriously, K-drama alongside anime??)
as for B-T's potential in the big bad world of licensed merchandise, i am also of mixed feelings.. i mean, LNs and VNs can be rightfully decent contributions to literature as say, some of the more sensationalized western fantasy fiction names out there. (Neil Gaiman, and some other lady writers who favor magic and vampires.. ) also, it would be a GREAT opportunity for exposure, if we're talking about the promise and potential of the japanese manga-anime-game sub-culture.
on the other hand, we as fans are wary of the long hand of the law, not to mention those persistent "moral" vanguards. all in all, legitimacy sounds like a good thing, but the negatives are certainly to be thought over..

Re: Baka-Television
Agreed. While multiple problems exist, the idea of BT becoming legitimate is not out of the realm of possibility. If BT can show itself as making a sincere effort to legitimize its standing in the LN and VN communities, then many of the legal problems should go away. Unfortunately, much of the bottom line is indeed money. It often costs millions of dollars to license something, but it may be worth doing some initial investigation to find out what the battle grounds are like.

Re: Baka-Television
essentially, most otaku who ever bother pondering on their interests are of conflicted opinions regarding the general issue of licensing..
pro: distribution is relatively restricted to those with access to japan's internal market. over all, its a MAJOR BOON to the franchise in general, IF the franchise does manage to pull in more heads to the fanbase. for that to happen though, a lot of factors have to be considered, perhaps most critical of all being relative time span between jap debut and foreign release..
con: as all otaku are likely to agree to, licensing and its consequences - translation - is perhaps the greatest Achilles' heel to the effort in general. leaving aside the unavoidable translation inaccuracies (cultural differences between languages and racial population groups involved), some groups with less concern for product quality end up botching the franchise altogether..
specific case in point, aside from all the dubbed anime we happen to come by at times.. i managed to play Da Capo's VN twice, 1st with the original JP version, then with the EN version courtesy of MangaGamer.. while the MG version was the more user-friendly of the 2, i noticed that translation quality degraded quite noticeably midway through each of the characters arcs. conspiracy of making only the first few parts decent aside, you'd think that if the company ever thought of investing more quality for their merchandise, the consumers would have a tad more drive to patronize..
DISCLAIMER: i have ABSOLUTELY nothing against MangaGamer.. their efforts are appreciable enough to satisfy this one

Re: Baka-Television
No one said anything about making the translation method professional. The model that would probably be the most successful in terms of fan satisfaction would be the current wiki system. The only difference would be that the site would charge a nominal fee to cover licensing fees. Thus, like crunchyroll, it would be on a membership basis with add-ins to make it marketable. The fans would not be paid for translating but be encouraged via other bonuses perhaps. Since it would be fans translating, editing, and the like, they would be able to edit and check each other's work with the admin in the background guarding against flaming. The system would need some tweaking and probably difficult to realize, but it should be worthwhile. BT would probably gain many people's respect.

Re: Baka-Television
It is somewhat socialist, but it would allow for a business model that licensing companies like Tokyopop are only starting to explore.

Re: Baka-Television
It is something that corrupt politicians (redundant, is it not?) keep making off with off of the backs of the poor laborers in fields.
Getting back onto topic, would anyone else care to fill in any more ideas for a more professional approach to translation here?

Re: Baka-Television
Isnt the thread supposed to be "Should TGM go public with B-T"?
I think its worth going for, but I still think we need to come up with a final decision before anything else... If you wanna discuss politics, feel free to start a new thread... If the answer is a solid "no" that wont change, this thread can even be locked there and then.

You need not forgive me.

If there is a single shred of hope left for the future of mankind,
I am very sorry, but, please begone!

I'm honestly not sure when the expiration date is. I don't think this is going down though. I gave her my contact info almost 3 weeks ago and I have yet to hear word from anyone.

Besides even if you did give an interview, at best, it'll probably end up on the cutting floor.
At worse, have your interview mangled and quotes taken out of context that'll make you seem like a pirate.
"Please note, we have added a consequence for failure.Any contact with the chamber floor will result in an unsatisfactory mark on your official test record, followed by death. Good luck."

Sorry to hear about your quick fall from stardom
If you guys are ever ask to hold light novel seminars in anime conventions, you have my explicit permission to present yourself as officials from B-T ^_^
But then it would be akin preaching to preachers...
