Madan no Ou to Vanadis (Machine Translation) ~Preview~
As discussed here, I decided to post a machine translation script with the hopes someone can properly look over it for the (hopefully not too many) translation errors as well as general English grammar. Grammar stuff I can do on my own, since I haven't done a pass over this, but it's best to get someone else to do this since my vocabulary tends to become limited when writing.
I used ABBYY FineReader to get raw --> text (Perhaps not the best $30 I spent, but I think it's worthwhile ), so there are a number of issues with the text conversion, though nothing terrible (Zhcted kept coming up with -| instead of the appropriate character, and ツ and ッ kept getting flipped around. This was translated with Translator Aggregator, set to use ATLAS, Google, and Excite translation engines, with wiktionary being used for individual characters the machines could not properly read. Hopefully there aren't too many problems with the script. Of the thirty pages in Chapter 1, I compared my machine script with the teaser florza did and there weren't too many glaring errors, though I'm ashamed of mine since I like his/her wording much better (like Danseuse. Damn, that's a fine word, so I had to thieve it, sorry florza).
Anyway, here's the script. Link to the raws + script is here. anonym.to, so copy/paste the link into your address bar. It includes my script for chapter 1 for those who want to do a more detailed comparison between the script and florza's translation. I'll be moving ahead with Volume 3, not Volume 2, since 2 has a very very detailed summary, and is largely translated from what I recall.

Dude the link is blocked by the Mediafire because its violate its rules. Therefore i cant download it. Can you just post the translation on the web just like how Zephyr did at the the jcafe web?

I'm surprised MediaFire bother to delete a translation of an LN that's not even licensed...
Better check my MediaFire folder now...

It should still work. Mediafire did not block the file but the referrer (anonym.to). It always does this. I have a habit of adding a referrer since various sites and forums don't like direct linking, so I just use one to cover all bases. Copy and paste the mediafire link provided (or drag and drop it) into your address bar and it should work.

I just finished reading the script and I have to say it's pretty darn good. It's hard to believe all of it was machine-translated. That said, there are some misspellings and grammatical mistakes, but the biggest issue is that some parts of the translation are kind of awkward but nothing a good editor cannot fix.
Just a question: how many hours did it take to make this script? and did you improve the machine translation manually afterwards in order to make it this good? Because again, it's really hard to believe all of it was machine-translated. Good job.

It took probably 1-2 hours a day, 2-3 weeks to do this. I didn't have much extra free time outside of this. Also, I took the raw script from the image converter and did things line by line instead of putting the whole thing through a machine translation and rewording it. Makes things a lot easier. If there were any parts which were particularly difficult to do, I would use wiktionary to find the meaning (mainly because I don't have my EN --> JP dictionaries on hand) and did my best with that.animefan425 wrote:I just finished reading the script and I have to say it's pretty darn good. And thanks for the compliment. I'm really hoping someone who can properly read Japanese can edit this so it's a proper script I've still got a few months to go before I can properly devote the time I want to formally learning the language. I have a few hours a day, but it doesn't give me any time to review what I learn, so I can't utilize it effectively.

God job with the machine translation, EnigmaticAxiom.
It's useless, it's all useless.

If every1 agrees to it, I will ask those above if we can have this on BT with the appropriate template.
Meanwhile 'am editing chapter 2 (there's not much for it though ). Any volunteers for the others?

Re: Madan no Ou to Vanadis (Machine Translation) ~Preview~
It's a machine translation, and seeing as my ability to read Japanese is quite limited, I am more liable to make mistakes in how I view things (i.e. meaning of a phrase when one person is speaking compared to the other, whether the text is speaking in narrative or in thought, and other similar things). I try to limit that by reading by sentence, line, and page, but there's a limit to what I can do without adding an extra 50+% time to look up the individual kanji.
I am quite certain there are mistranslations, which is why I posted it here, in the hopes that someone who can read Japanese (or some other possible translation, like Chinese) who happened to be interested in the series could give at least a brief look through on it. At the very least, I'm relatively confident it is more accurate a translation as a whole than a normal machine translation. Mind you, if that's not the case, I wouldn't be surprised, though I would be sad. Sad Bear.
Studart: I still don't have the privilege to send PMs, so I'll just respond here. I think I posted it before, but I use Translator Aggregator (I haven't updated, I guess? My version is not 0.4.9.r171 but 0.4.6.r156, if that really changes anything). I just have it set to send the copy/pasted text to the different translation engines. I use Atlas, since it seems the most accurate, Google, since it seems more reliable than other online translators, and Excite for an extra, more for different takes on word choice, since I'm terrible at thinking of that stuff on my own. I look at entire lines (multiple sentences), individual sentences, and sections separated by punctuation (commas, really), if the translation is not straightforward. If I still have trouble, I add extra translators. If that still doesn't work, I usually have to go a page or two ahead before I get an idea for the general context, then I can attempt an educated guess. It's a tedious process, but I've done it enough that it's not that bad. All it takes is a story interesting enough and the patience to get through a chapter or two. By that time, usually the story is interesting enough that you'd want to keep reading, even if it's time consuming. In my case, I started with Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, which was probably a mistake because it's annoying for even formal translators to read. I suggest something simpler.
tl;dr: just get Atlas and TA and fiddle around with it.

It works just fine for me. Change the language option to Japanese (or your other source). You can also try Rikaichan for the translations except you will have to spend more time on it.
